William Cleveland

William Cleveland is a writer, musician and the founder and Director of the Center for the Study of Art and Community. Established in 1991, CSA&C works to build new working relationships between the arts and the broader society in communities around the world. Mr. Cleveland’s 30-year history, producing arts programs in educational, community, and social institutions also includes his leadership of the Walker Art Center’s Education and Community Programs Department, California’s Arts-In-Corrections Program and the California State Summer School for the Arts. His research and educational efforts over the past three decades has helped to establish the arts as a powerful resource for community development and social change in the US and overseas. Mr. Cleveland’s books, Art In Other Places, Making Exact Change and Art and Upheaval are regarded as seminal works in the burgeoning field of arts-based community development. His most recent book, written with Patricia Shifferd, Between Grace and Fear: The Role of the Arts in a Time of Change explores the place of human creativity in the 21st Century.
